Earlier this week, a Tumblr called the Hawkeye Initiative posted a story about an employee at game publisher Meteor Entertainment who pranked her CEO, Mark Long, by swapping out a poster of a scantily clad female mechanic for a custom poster of a scantily-clad male mechanic (illustrated by fellow Meteor employee Sam Kirk) and waited to see the reaction. After the initial surprise, Long thanked her for “calling [him] on [his] bullshit” and decided to hang the posters side-by-side in the office. The story went viral, making the rounds at nearly every major gaming website and scoring nearly 200,000 page reviews. The employee, who goes by the pseudonym K2, spoke about the prank for the first time with Wired, and about what the internet’s reaction to it could say about the best way to approach the gender problem in the gaming industry.

Jen is a second generation Chinese-American who speaks from her experiences navigating two distinct kinds of selves—an Asian identity shaped at home by her immigrant parents and a Western identity acquired outside the home growing up in Scarsdale, New York. At home, she learned an outward-looking sense of self, one acutely aware of her role in society, her duties, her obligations—she calls it “interdependent.” But outside the home, the self-identity she was encouraged to develop was inward-looking and “independent.” Her task as an American youth was to discover what it was she really wanted and to articulate what made her unique. As it turns out, those were two truly different projects.

And since we’re on the subject of unreleased Television tunes, I just received a re-up request for this thing. Enjoy! Here’s the original write-up.

Don’t get too excited — but get excited! This is just my own compilation of Television tunes that didn’t make it onto either Marquee Moon or Adventure, but that the band played live from 1975-1978. And sadly, Paul Simon does not appear anywhere, at least as far as I can tell — I just love that photo too much not to post it. What were they talking about? Anyway! Tom Verlaine and Co. had more than enough good material to go around in those days — these cast-offs are good to great, even if the recording quality sometimes leaves a little to be desired. There are epic jams (of course), but also some interesting detours, like the country rock of “Come On In,” the weird psychodrama of “Poor Circulation,” and the song I’m convinced would’ve been Television’s radio hit, the infernally catchy “O Mi Amore.” A couple tracks here would be reworked for Verlaine’s solo career (though “Kingdom Come” is not the same tune as on his self-titled debut), while others would be discarded completely. Despite the sometimes lo-fi nature of these audience recordings, this comp is still an essential piece of the Television puzzle. Turn it on, turn it up.

We were surprised, after watching this documentary about Chilean Buddhist, biologist, and neuroscientist Francisco Varela (pictured below), how beautifully he melded religion, philosophy, and science into his life. Most don’t know his name, but he was an integral figure in beginning the dialogue between Buddhism and modern science in the 1970s, when he connected scientists with the Dalai Lama. A definite must-see. Watch it here.
